Unit 3 (Relationship Between Literature and Art)- Development of Ideas. Card Print.

This is my progression of card print experimentation. Similar to the previous Unit, I produced a positive and negative template. I created my design from a combination of my photos and painted studies. I also used different surface texture to print onto, for example, putting a thick coat of emulsion onto the paper, and then rolling crumpled up foil onto it (top right). For the bottom two studies I ripped up and combined different prints. I feel the bottom left study is a stronger outcome due to the contrast.

Unit 3 (Relationship Between Literature and Art)- Development of Ideas.

Here I continued to develop the style of the crab shell. I feel that this one is the most successful. I also began to incorporate the poetry again with appropriate quotes relating to the subject matter.

Unit 3 (Relationship Between Literature and Art)- Development of Ideas.

For this observational study I continued to try out different combinations of media. For example, for the first layer I created the rough shape and colour of this crab shell with coloured inks, then sprinkled sea salt over the surface to create the textured effect. I then added detail with oil pastel. I have chosen to continue with this style in this Unit.

Unit 3 (Relationship Between Literature and Art)- Observational. Van Gogh.

Here I worked in the style of Van Gogh to produce an observational study in oil pastel using very small, layered strokes.

Unit 3 (Relationship Between Literature and Art)- Development of Ideas.

In this study I chose to focus on colour and texture. Here I exaggerated the colours of one of my photos and applied the paint very quickly and thickly as I had to scratch the words of the poem into it before the paint started to dry. I also used black paper so the words would stand out more.

Unit 3 (Relationship Between Literature and Art)- Development of Ideas.

This was my first piece where I incorporated the poetry of Sylvia Plath into my seascapes. I continued my experimentation of methods to add text into my work by scratching the poem into the painting with a stick. I also scratched into the bark of the wood with a stick to add texture. This again was done using oil paint.

Unit 3 (Relationship Between Literature and Art)- Initial Ideas. Kurt Jackson.

Here I explored the style of Kurt Jackson. I chose to look at the work of Jackson because of his use of text in his work, and the relationship of the painting to the words in the piece. This was very similar to my chosen subject matter for Unit 3. This was my first piece where I had to experiment with how to incorporate the text into the painting. This piece was also done using oil paint and applied with mainly a pallet knife.

Unit 3 (Relationship Between Literature and Art)- Initial Ideas. Kurt Jackson

Here, influenced by Kurt Jackson, I experimented with painting atmospheric seascapes. This was the first time I had used oil paint and I continued my exploration of methods of applying paint. Here I mainly applied the paint with a rag and pallet knife.

Unit 2 (Work space)- Final Piece.

Influenced by Kiefer, I embedded items found around the subject area (eg rags, card) into the surface texture. I also incorporated photos into the background, then spread a thick, textured coat of emulsion over it all. I also carried on the idea of duplicating the same image in two different ways; firstly with the painted sewing machine, and secondly with the outline painting of the sewing machine, and the fineliner, and fineliner onto photo study of the screw. I also dripped and dry brushed paint over the piece to recreate the 'messy' environment of the workplace.

Unit 2 (Work space)- Development of Ideas.

Here I experimented with composition ideas for a possible final piece. I focused on trying to reproduce the same image in as many different ways as possible (top right). This is how I began to form my ideas for the final piece for this unit.

Unit 2 (Work space)- Cardprint Final Outcomes.

For my card print design for this unit I combined different close up copies of my observational drawings. I also created a positive and negative template (top left and right). I then used coloured inks onto black paper. Although the application of the coloured ink took some getting used to, I was happy with the outcome once I thought about colour scheme.

Unit 2 (Work space)- Development of Ideas.

For this unit I was very interested in experimenting with different media. This was influenced by my research of Kiefer in my previous Unit. Here I focused on working into photographs with fineliner (bottom middle), paint and fineliner (top left), acrylic (top middle), and acrylic and fineliner (top right). I was very happy with these pieces as they created a very different outcome to just painting or drawing the image.

Unit 1 (Structure)- Development of Ideas.

These are my observational studies based on architecture I saw whilst on my college art trip to London. For the piece top right of the page, I started to experiment with heavy surface texture (influenced by Valery Koshlyakov, who was exhibiting at Saatchi gallery at the time). For the adjacent study I photocopied said surface and then applied paint with my finger. The study on the bottom left is again drawn onto a photocopy of the textured surface. The work of Koshlyakov heavily influenced my final outcomes for this topic.

Unit 1 (Structure)- Initial Artist Research. Anselm Kiefer.

Here I experimented with the style of Anselm Kiefer. I enjoyed looking at his work as it taught me to think about applying paint in different ways. For example using a stick instead of a paintbrush (top right), painting with a rag (bottom left), and painting on top of photos (top left). This experimentation had a great impact on the rest of my work to date.

Unit 1 (Structure)- Card Print Final Outcomes.

These are the strongest final outcomes of my first attempt at card print. I composed the design from my photos and observational drawings. I prepared the surfaces to print onto with emulsion and inks, and adding surface texture by rolling bubble wrap in paint onto the paper. I feel that the print on the top left of the page is the most successful due to the contrast in the colours of the surface.

Unit 1 (Structure)- Monoprint Experimentation.

As this was my first time using monoprint my aim was to find out which methods worked and which didn't. For example, sketching onto the back of paper whilst it is lay on the ink, then adding detail by lightly rubbing my thumb over areas was the most successful (bottom left). Also, 'painting' into the ink with turps created an interesting outcome (middle right). I also experimented with the use of stencils which i created from my own observational drawings.

Unit 1 (Structure)- Initial Artist Research. Fiona Rae

Here I experimented with replicating the style of Fiona Rae's work. For example, applying the paint in different layers, dripping paint down the paper, and painting in a very digital- like manor. Rae's work definitely influenced the rest of my Unit 1 project, evident through the 'new' or urban side of my final piece.
